"Motorola to Manufacture the Next 'Nexus' Android Smartphone?"

Android Authority got a tip from a Google insider that the next Nexus Android device could be a Motorola manufacture.

While this is a completely unsupported rumor at this point, it makes sense.  HTC did a great job with the Nexus One, and then Google says “Sayonara, we’re switching to Samsung.”  This is Google avoiding playing favorites by keeping all the major manufacturers under the great big Google garage.  So if there’s going to be another Nexus smartphone, Google will give another player a turn.  So who’s left?  LG, Sony Ericsson, and Motorola, that’s who.

Motorola is clearly committed to Android in a big way, with their multiple DROID-branded smartphones at Verizon, their game-changing Atrix 4G that powers a laptop-dock, its CDMA twin the DROID Bionic, and of course, the XOOM.

This tablet is Google’s lead device that will debut their new Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablet-optimized OS.  Android Authority even notes that the XOOM could be considered the “Nexus Tablet,” since it’s first to the Honeycomb sweetness and it will be pure Honeycomb at that.  The XOOM won’t be weighed down with anything like MotoBlur.  It will be a “pure Google experience.”

So with that said, and with a Google engineer at CES noting that Honeycomb will be the future for smartphones as well as tablets, having Motorola develop the next Nexus with NVIDIA’s dual core Tegra 2 System on a Chip (SoC) is a win with awesome sauce.  There are many announced smartphones using this beast of an SoC (the above-mentioned Atrix 4G and DROID Bionic included), but they’re hampered with MotoBlur, as the LG Optimus 2X is similarly hamstrung with LG’s own proprietary smartphone user interface.  The next Nexus should showcase that incredible Tegra 2 without any bloatware or UI getting in the developers’ or users’ way.

A smartphone with the Tegra 2 and Honeycomb?  And Moto’s going to build it?  I sure hope this rumor has some truth to it, because this satisfied DROID X user wants one RIGHT NOW.  Are you as intrigued as I am?  Which manufacturer would you see snagging the next Nexus phone.
