Spec Leak, Spec Oops! Wildfire 2, Desire 2, Desire HD2, Galaxy S2

Here’s an interesting hot dish of specs for you, courtesy of PocketNow and UK retailer Expansys, on four different phones. We’ve got a few HTC phones for you, plus a Samsung. Expansys also has release dates, but whether they apply worldwide or just the United Kingdom we will have to see. Of course, we expect to have the answer to all these questions from Mobile World Congress next week.

Before listing the specs, I want to warn you that a number of people have questioned them as being wildly off. I’ll discuss the discrepencies below, and there are such major descrepencies I’m surprised so many sites ran these spec lists without doing a little research.

HTC Wildfire 2 — Release date (estimated) May 23rd

All we have on the Wildfire 2 is some rendered pictures of it and the Pyramid (Desire HD 2) below.

HTC Desire 2 — Release date (estimated) May 2nd

We haven’t heard much about the Desire 2 other than some photos and the rumor it will be announced at MWC next week and that it has Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread) and a 3.7 inch screen.

This is the device codenamed Pyramid, according to Pocketnow. Yet these specs are quite different than what we listed in the linked article.

Samsung Galaxy S2 — Release date (estimated) June 13th

Here’s what we previously thought about the Galaxy S2, which also doesn’t quite fit this list.

So why did I say some of these specs are wildly off?

First, these chipsets are not mix-n-match. If you buy a phone with a particular SoC (system on a chip), you get the same set of specs every time. If you want something else, you have to buy a different SoC. That said, the Qualcomm 8×60 doesn’t come with an Adreno 205 graphics processor, but a much faster Adreno 220, and the CPU is clocked at 1.5 GHz (although of course the phone could be underclocked for better battery life). So both the HD2 and the Galaxy S2 would have the Adreno 220, not the 205, given the specified Qualcomm chipset.

Other oddities include the screen size for the Pyramid, which is just woefully small: 3.2 inches for a dual core device? We already know it’s going to be 4.3 inches. And for that matter, notice they didn’t call out that phone as dual core when it certainly is, the chipset says so! The current HTC Desire HD has 768 MB of RAM, why would its successor only have 512 MB? Why does the Desire 2 use a first-generation Snapdragon chipset (8250)?

And get your head around this one: The Desire 2 specs are the same as the original Desire specs! How likely do you think that is, given that the Desire came out almost exactly a year ago?

Next, everyone has been talking about the Samsung Galaxy 2 getting Samsung’s own Orion processor. Now, it’s possible that the Orion won’t be ready for a Q2 in-phone shipment, but in that case wouldn’t the phone be delayed? How easy is it to put in a completely different processor at that point?

Maybe whoever at Expansys put the spec sheet together was doing a cut and paste, or maybe that spec sheet was a placeholder for a set of specs to be announced later. There’s a reason to use greeking when you want a dummy placeholder sheet.

Meanwhile, here is another set of specs leaked from another UK retail site, Mobile Fun, for the Samsung Galaxy S2:

Hey, that’s a good point! Why didn’t the Expansys spec sheets mention what version of Android these phones were running?’Anyway, Mobile Fun says the Galaxy S2 could be released as soon as March 4th.
