The latest craze for apps is to be socially active in group settings. Color, an app available on iPhone and Android that shares photos with other users within a 150ft radius of you, is no different. The free app was released Wednesday and they were given $41 million to make the magic happen.

The app is best used when around fellow users because it allows you to post videos, pictures, text publicly for all to see. This brings privacy issues to light as more and more applications aim to incorporate location based services. The question developers now have to answer is, what private information should remain private? Color, in particular, has a lot to answer for as any photos uploaded go public instead of being stored on a server for your personal viewing like Instagram.

Raises $41 Million to Deliver Sharing in a Post-PC World

Color raised $41M in financing from Bain Capital Ventures, Sequoia Capital and Silicon Valley Bank. Sequoia Capital’s Leone will join Mike Krupka, Managing Director, Bain Capital Ventures on Color’s Board of Directors. Proceeds will be used to develop Color’s pioneering technology and provide service on a global scale.

A patent-pending technology pioneered by Color intelligently identifies nearby smartphones, whether at a local park or at a concert, using advanced proximity algorithms. Every photo, video, and text captured by each smartphone through Color is instantly shared with surrounding phones also using Color. There are no attachments, uploading or post-production work required.
