Samsung Galaxy S Line Gets Early Taste of Gingerbread

Everyone wants to get their hands on some Gingerbread goodness from Google these days. Android’s tasty new OS was leaked for the Samsung Galaxy S on a Polish Android forum. Someone with the username ‘goofoos‘ was the one who originally uploaded the ROM and now it has made its way over to the XDA-Developers forum for further investigation. Reading through the many pages of comments it is clear to see that TONS of users are very anxious to get access to Gingerbread on their devices.

Unfortunately, this Galaxy S Gingerbread is still in the oven

This has been confirmed as being an official build of Gingerbread for the Samsung Galaxy S but it is not yet finished and there are lots of bugs. Scouring through the many pages of comments, this is what I have found to be most common with this beta build:

  • This ROM has an average Quadrant benchmark score between 1000 and 1150 (keep in mind that Quadrant is not optimized for 2.3.x yet)
  • There is no Gingerbread screen lock animation in this build
  • There is no Gingerbread keyboard in this build
  • There is no all-black titlebar in this build
  • There is no orange overscroll glow
  • Lots of users are complaining that the Market will open but won’t allow them to download anything (Possible solution is to use Applanet)
  • Lots of users are complaining that Swype will not work
  • There are lots of force closes and random reboots

Galaxy S Gingerbread: The Upside

Are there any positives with this beta build? It seems as though boot times are a lot faster as claimed by user ‘jetpackjeff’ and there are optimizations in the pull-down notification menu and browser. Keep in mind that this is not a final version at all but it does show that Samsung is making strides to get Gingerbread 2.3.2 out on devices as quickly as possible. Don’t be too discouraged though because Samsung has announced that Android 2.3 is coming to the Galaxy S next month (or soon thereafter).

I definitely do not recommend rushing out to put this software on your phone because not only does it require a lot of advanced knowledge but it also has the potential to ruin your phone if you do not know what you are doing. Even if you do know what you’re doing, I would hold off on this just for the fact that there are so many bugs it is not even worth installing. I know this is subjective but if you hardcore fans really want Gingerbread on your Galaxy S, go grab a beta build of CyanogenMod 7 for a better Gingerbread experience.
