The good news is that Google Nexus One owners get Android 2.3.3 OS (Gingerbread). The bad news is that along with the rolling Gingerbread update came several reports that manually updating to Gingerbread was breaking the Google Voice application.
Users who did opt to manually update their device reported that the Android 2.3.3 Google Voice issue range from the app being completely absent from the app drawer, greyed out, and unable to install or uninstall . One of the many unsatisfied user’s commented:
“After manually updating to Android Gingerbread (2.3.3), I cannot access Google Voice. I can’t uninstall it because it’s not visible in the list of applications on my device but I can’t install it from the market because the market says the application is already installed. It worked perfectly in Android 2.2.2 (prior to the update)”
So what’s the deal Google? Other than the obvious bug oversight, Nexus One owners were thinking that a regional block was placed on Voice, shutting out the rest of the world. But this rumor was dismissed with several users outside the US already commenting on their failed attempts to use a US SIM to gain access to Google Voice.
A possible fix for the problem for now would be to uninstall Google Voice if you can, find the older APK version of the application, re-download and install and then of course try the upgrade again.
