T-Mobile Announces new dual core Android smartphone, the T-Mobile G2X

T-Mobile may have agreed to be acquired by AT&T, but they still have plenty of Android love to share while the merger is worked out.  In fact they have some to share with us right now.  Here is their latest self-branded Android smartphone, officially making its debut, the T-Mobile G2x.

T-Mobile G2X has Specs to Spare

The G2x is made by LG, and it’s a rebranded LG Optimus 2X.  Yes, that means it’s a dual core phone sporting an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset, which means a pair of 1 GHz CPUs keep this device moving.  In addition the G2X has a four inch touchscreen, 8 GB of ROM, and dual cameras to go with the dual cores.  The rear camera is 8 megapixels with an LED flash, while the front-facing camera is a respectable 1.3 megapixels.

T-Mobile G2X has Stock Android, no LG UI

Best of all, this powerhouse has stock Android OS 2.2 (Froyo).  Yes, stock. No LG UI, which was on the Optimus 2X, to get it your way.  This fits with T-Mobile’s other G-branded devices, all of which run stock, and all the others were manufactured by HTC.

And that includes the T-Mobile G2, so it’s a little surprising that T-Mobile would name the LG dual core smartphone after HTC’s device.  We already had some advance notice that the G2X was going to be announced at CTIA, but who knew it was going to be an LG device?

Getting back to Froyo, Android OS 2.3  (Gingerbread) is being tested and will supposedly be released for the G2X soon after launch.

Bloatware or Merely Extraware?

There are some pre-loaded apps, and we don’t know whether these are unremovable bloatware or if you can easily delete them if they’re not of interest to you.  Included are Need for Speed SHIFT HD, DTS Ultra Mobile, T-Mobile TV, Zinio eReader, and T-Mobile Chat (powered by Qik).  In addition, there is a demo of Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance (N.O.V.A.), a sci-fi game.

Want one?  Various rumors and suggestions indicate that both the T-Mobile G2X and another dual core LG offering, the T-Mobile G-Slate, will be available on April 2oth.  T-Mobile is far more coy, their announcement merely promises we’ll see it in “Spring.”
