Android Developers Release Latest OS Version Stats

The folks over at Android Developers have released the total number of operating versions that have accessed the Android Market over the past few weeks. There are a mass of Android-powered phones out there and with that comes different versions of  the operating system. The tablet-specific version of Android, OS 3.0 (Honeycomb) only accounts for a very small number whereas Android 2.2 or Froyo is the most widely used version.

On Beyond Froyo

It’s understandable to see Android 3.0 only having a very small share as the only device to be running it out in the wild is the Motorola Xoom and of course as the other offerings from Samsung and LG go on sale that number will increase.  The Gingerbread version of Android, Android 2.3, is also a fairly new update and a big chunk of phones hitting the shops over the next few weeks and months will have Gingerbread as their default version.  A number of phones such as the Desire range from HTC will be getting the update as confirmed a few weeks back.

Got Cupcake or Donut?  Poor You

If you happen to be running the earlier versions of Android, 1.5 and 1.6, you will be among a very small number of people with it and as phones get more powerful these versions will become obsolete. Most budget Android phones will be running Android 2.1 these days but if you do happen to own a phone with Android 1.5 or 1.6, you will no doubt be in sight of your device upgrade and there will be a mass of phones running the newer versions for you to choose from.
