Seattle T-Mobile Stores Issue $1000 Speed Challenge: Galaxy S 4G Faster than iPhone

This weekend, Seattle T-Mobile stores are challenging iPhone owners to take on their Samsung Galaxy S 4G in a download speed test.  If your iPhone, on either Verizon or AT&T, can beat the Galaxy S 4G in 2 out of 3 trials, you win $1000.  The contest takes place this Friday, the 29th, through Sunday May 1st.  Check the poster above for the ten participating stores, and you can see a larger version of that poster right here.

This is T-Mobile’s way of letting the world, or at least Greater Seattle, know that their Galaxy S successor is packing an ST-Ericsson Thor M5730 modem, capable of a blazing 21 Mbps download connection speed on their HSPA+ network.  And it is about time that Magenta got some phones that could show just how fast that network is.

Unless You’re Planning a Massive DDoS on T-Mo, How Can Any iPhone Win?

AT&T’s iPhone is limited to 7.2 Mbps download speed, while Phone Scoop’s test of the Galaxy S 4G showed peak download speeds above 7 Mbps, so that looks like a pretty safe bet for T-Mo.  Verizon’s iPhone uses their 3G network, so don’t expect Big Red to boast about their iPhone’s data rate either.  Until we see an iPhone on LTE, T-Mobile shouldn’t have too much to worry about.

I do wonder why T-Mobile decided to issue this challenge in Microsoft’s backyard instead of Apple’s, though.  Let us know your thoughts on T-Mo’s new approach to network chest-pounding, or on the Samsung Galaxy S 4G.
