I have been using Catch since just before the name change from 3banana and it’s long been one of the first apps that I install on a new device. While it lacks some of the features of Evernote or Springpad, it’s simple, elegant note taking and sync features keep me locked in.

Releasing at Google I/O, Catch has a new version that will take advantage of the Honeycomb tablet layout. New features from their blog post:

  • Fragments: Creates multiple views so users can see more data on the screen
  • Action Bar: Provides context-aware controls
  • Tag Picker: Offers simplified tagging interface for quicker information capture
  • Starred Notes: Supports lightweight organization for favorite entries
  • Enhanced Note Editor: Allows faster composing using multiple images, voice memos, or file attachments

The new tablet interface makes use of all of that extra screen real estate while maintaining the simple and reliable note taking and syncing. The Android phone app has also been updated with the same UI as the new tablet enhanced version.

Here’s an interesting bit; The Official Google I/O app is powered by Catch and the Catch sync platform, providing these features:

  • Look at the schedule
  • Look through detailed session and speaker info
  • Look through info about companies in the Developer Sandbox
  • Star sessions and Sandbox companies
  • Get the current buzz on I/O via real-time search stream
  • View a map of the conference
  • Create and manage all conference notes using Catch

It will be interesting to see if this is the first of many “Powered by Catch” apps or if this is just a one-off implementation. Quick, simple and reliable note taking with full sync is a needed service and with it’s interface and capabilities Catch wins over the Docs app for my short note-taking needs.
