Atom Z2460 Penwell SoC
Intel showed off their new Medfield Platform at both CES and MWC this year using their capable Form Factor Reference Design. The Xolo 900 reviewed by AnandTech is basically that FFRD in retail form with very few changes to the hardware or stock Android 2.3.7 in this case. The Atom Z2460 SoC is running at 1.6GHz, there is 1GB of RAM, and a 4″ (1024 x 600) resolution display. It is rounded out with an 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front facing camera, and 16GB of storage.
Anandtech was able to get a hold of one of the Xolo 900s that is only available in India and put it through a benchmark test against all of the top devices today. Despite only being a single core SoC it is able to match its dual and quad core Atom counterparts in many of the test run.
Overall Performance
The overall performance of the Medfield Platform though not class leading is certainly more than acceptable in all but the most graphically intense task. This is Intel’s first entry into the modern smartphone space and this is admittedly a mid-range core but as the Linpack graph shows it beats all but the new Qualcomm S4 in single core performance. At the end of this year when Intel’s dual core chip comes out with the new GPU it should be on par with the best of the best. Hopefully the next gen Intel chips make it into U.S. devices and bring some more competition and increased performance to our mobile devices.
