Data Shared Between Devices

In an announcement made at CITA AT&T Mobility CEO let it be known that the wireless provider will introduce family data plans this year. The new plans will allow for the purchase of a single data package that can be shared between devices both smartphones and tablets. This is the same type of plans that we have been hearing Verizon will be introducing this year as well so this could be a tide shift on how data will be packaged moving forward.

AT&T and Verizon both believe that family data plans will encourage more adoption of additional devices such as tablets that are large users of mobile data. Both companies reported record financial results due to the increased consumption of data and the removal of unlimited plans. Data now makes up the majority of the income for the mobile operators and they are trying to capitalize on the new business model.

I am not quite sold on the idea of shared data and will need to see exactly how they plan to implement the plans to be sure. As of now I am on a new 2 year plan with Verizon that allowed me to upgrade to a 4G device and be grandfathered into keeping my unlimited data for $30 a month. For individuals like myself there is no way this plan would improve on what I currently have. However new customers who don’t have the option of unlimited data maybe tempted to get a plan where multiple users could share a 5GB cap or it could be shared between your phone and your tablet if the prices are right. Are you looking forward to the new family data plans?
