Benchmarks

Benchmarks get a lot of press when new devices and CPUs are released and some are better than others and giving numbers that represent the real world performance one should expect from their device. Whether you are testing the overclocks or kernel changes on a device or testing in store to see which product to purchase benchmarks are the best tools to compare the performance of Android devices. They can test boot speed, network performance, web browsing, gaming, processor, and I/O numbers for a multitude of devices and configurations. So without further let’s get on to the Top Ten Android Benchmark Apps.

10.  Boot Benchmark

Coming in at the ten spot is Boot Benchmarkwhich is a useful tool that measures the time it takes to start-up your device. Now that feature alone might not seem so useful, but it also allows you to see which process are being used at start-up along with their CPU usage. It presents the information in detailed pie and bar graphs making this a great tool for those who try to squeeze every last bit of performance out of their phone. The app is fully functional and is a no frills free addition to the top ten Benchmarking options.

9.  Speed Test

Speed Test is one that I am sure most of you have heard, it’s the number one option for testing your network speed. It chooses the closest server to your location and test your ping, download and upload speeds for both WiFi and your 3G/4G data connection. You can use it to try out your new LTE connection, see how good your WiFi is connecting, and see if your carrier is throttling your “unlimited” data. Speed Test  could really be placed anywhere on this list depending how much your network speed varies, or is important to you. I put it in at number nine because its not something that should vary that often and once you run it a few times it probably wont be used again for a while.

8.Linpack

Linpack is cross platform benchmark that measure raw CPU performance in both single and multi-thread operations. It gives results in millions of floating point operations per second (MFLOPS), which you can save to check between settings or upload and check between devices. Linpack is used on all types of computing platforms and is a great tool to compare direct performance of different devices and systems.

7. Nenamark2

NenaMark2 is GPU benchmark meant to test the 3D graphics rendering power of your mobile device. It is a OpenGL|ES 2.0 benchmark for high-end mobile devices that will give you a performance comparison on how your device will run current and upcoming game titles. Performance is measured in (FPS) and like the others can be uploaded and compared to other devices and setups including phones and tablets.

6.Vellamo

Vellamo is an Android benchmark that test the mobile web performance of your device. Mobile web performance is something of growing importance as more of us spend more time online when mobile as compared to desktop PCs. The test factors in measurements including networking, JavaScript, rendering, and user experience into a total score that can be uploaded and compared to other Android devices. The test is reliable and combines all of the factors that go into a pleasant mobile web experience and should be considered when purchasing your next mobile device.

5. Smartbench 2012

Smartbench 2012 is an up to date benchmark that measures the multi-core performance of your Android device. It runs multiple test and gives you two scores for which to compare a productivity and gaming score. Once the test is complete you can upload your numbers and compare them based on average or each score individually and see how your setup compares to other devices and set ups. I’ve done some tweaking to my Nexus and as you can see it has paid dividends when it comes to my productivity scores and allows me to track how each change affects my performance.

4. Quadrant 2.0

Quadrant 2.0 is the updated version of what has been the default benchmark application for Android for years. It test the complete performance of your smartphone or tablet and gives you a total score and a score broken up by each measurement. It is configured to take advantage of multi-core processors and test CPU, I/O and 3D graphics. It may not be the most complete test but it is a good comparison tool and bragging point should you score high enough.

3. CF-Bench

This is a tool I use to test kernel updates and other tweaks I have made and how they impact each level of performance on my device. It also allows you to compare to other devices and should be one of the few benchmark tools you use when checking performance numbers of devices you have or are looking to purchase.

2. GlBenchmark

As games become more graphically intense the performance of your Android device becomes more important GLBenchmark is a good tool to test the current and future performance of mobile devices. The benchmark runs a multitude of test at different settings including of screen capabilities of your device at HD resolutions. If you plan on playing games on your Android then this is a tool you must check out when rating the performance of the devices in question.

1. Antutu Benchmark

AnTuTu Benchmark can run a full test of a key project, through the “Memory Performance”,”CPU Integer Performance”,”CPU Floating point Performance”,”2D 3D Graphics Performance”,”SD card reading/writing speed”,”Database IO” performance testing on the mobile phone Performance of the hardware to make score.

As you can see from the description it is a complete test suite, that measures almost every aspect of performance on your device. It gives both individual numbers and a complete score with the ability to upload and compare your score with other devices and setups. Out of all the benchmarks included Antutu gives the most consistent and well-rounded score and if you had to choose just one test to run this would be the one.
