Nuance Communications, Inc. is the company behind powerhouses like Dragon Dictation and the Swype text input app. Users generally love or hate the Swype input method of continuous motion, with few falling in the middle, but Nuance is looking to bring more people into the fold with a project called Swype Living Language, currently entering the beta phase. The goal of Living Language is to bring more updates to its predictive text system by allowing users to opt-in to a connected service that learns from analyzing their text-input data.
This project is a continuation of the ‘Hotwords’ project announced last September, Living Language uses crowdsourcing to keep Swype up-to-date with the latest in user parlance. Language dictionaries can make or break a text app, because the more time a user spends working with auto-correct or adding new words to their device library the less likely they are to continue using that service. People expect a text-input app to learn from their personal habits, but now Nuance wants to learn from everyone’s habits and combine them into one super-powerful ever-evolving language dictionary shared amongst all users.
The system uses “trending words” to determine what phrases are becoming popular and would be expected to be recognized by the app. The service is completely opt-in, and since privacy concerns are a major issue with a crowdsourced program such as this the developers realize there will be many questions about what data is recorded and for how long. If a user opts-in then their text input will be recorded and periodically sent in for evaluation by Nuance systems, and periodic updates will be returned that include updated language libraries and predictive capabilities.

Other updates to the Swype system include a growing number of supported languages, including: Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Greek, Hebrew, Malay, Romanian, Slovak, Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, and Ukrainian. Swype also now includes a feature called Smart Editor, which analyzes an entire sentence in the same way that a spelling/grammar check would work in a traditional word processor, and flags potential issues in sentence structure or spelling for users attention.

Swype now also features Smart Editor, which analyzes an entire sentence, flagging any potential errors for a quick fix and update, including suggesting the most likely alternatives based on contextual analysis.
Swype has also expanded dictation capabilities and now supports Dragon Dictation in a dozen new languages including Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Greek, Hebrew, Malay, Romanian, Slovak, Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, and Ukrainian.
