Don’t look now but Twitter wants to make a splash in the music delivery service much in the same way they did with video and their “Vine” app. It has just been a couple of months since they acquired “We Are Hunted”, a music discovery service, and now it appears that the social networking company is about to launch a stand alone music app using the their technology.
This new app will be called Twitter Music and will supposedly be ready for IOS devices by the end of the month. The service won’t be like the traditional music services that we are used to however, according to someone in the know. Twitter’s take on music streaming will offer suggestions to the user regarding artists and songs based on the people or bands that a particular person follows. The music will then be streamed via Soundcloud.
Since Twitter Music carries the company’s branding it will have a similar look to the original app including the blue bird in the corner. After the sign in process is completed, users take a quick orientation complete with suggestions if they are signing in using their Twitter login information. People will then be taken into the main app which features four different tabs that cover various forms of music discovery.
First up is the “Suggested” tab which as has been previously discussed give you suggestions based on who you are following. Next up is the #NowPlaying tab offering songs up that are tweeted by people you are following using that hashtag. Third in the line is the “Popular” tab that shows trending songs throughout the service. Finally users will see the “Emerging” tab which as you can guess gives you a taste of a band or artist that you may not have yet heard of but are on the cusp of a breakthrough.
It doesn’t look like there will be an Android version of this service at least for right now, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing it down the road. Really though it’s a pretty crowded field right now anyway. Not only do we have the old standbys like Spotify and Pandora, there are those persistent rumors that Google is set to launch not one but two streaming services. That’s not to say this isn’t something to watch for in the future. Maybe by the time it gets to us all of the kinks will be ironed out anyway.
