Like clockwork, Google has updated the Android distribution numbers in the developers dashboard. Google updates these at the beginning of every month to show developers the amount of people on each version of Android. These numbers are always pretty surprising, especially to see people still using early versions of Android. For instance, 1.5% of Android users are still on Android 2.1 – Eclair.
Android 1.6 – Donut is still clocking in with 0.1% of the Android market, Eclair at 1.5%, Froyo at 3.2%, Gingerbread at 36.5%, Honeycomb at 0.1%, Ice Cream Sandwich at 25.7%, and Jelly Bean at 33%. So Jelly Bean is really catching up to Gingerbread, as Android 2.3 continues to fall. What’s interesting here is that Jelly Bean has now passed up Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a good think, even though the majority of users are still on Gingerbread. But it’s almost even between Gingerbread and Jelly Bean.
So where do these numbers come from? Well Google collects data from devices that have accessed the Play Store in the past 2-weeks and compiles it together. So if you didn’t use the Play Store in the past two weeks, you probably weren’t part of this. But if you use your phone at all, you’ve probably been in the Play Store in the past 14 days.
You can check out the complete report in the Android Developer Dashboard. Google has a bunch of interesting stats in there for us to check out and possibly drool over. Hopefully we’ll see Android 4.3 make it onto the list for next month. I know I’m not the only one hoping for that, right?
