Earlier today, when Google told us that Android 4.4 would be Kit Kat, to say we were shocked would be an understatement. Key Lime Pie had been rumored many times, and even “confirmed a few times. Here I’m using “confirmed” very loosely. But anyways we’re headed to Kit Kat next, and earlier we found out that Google and Nestle had struck a licensing deal to use Kit Kat back at Mobile World Congress, and surprisingly, no cash was involved. Good Guy Nestle!

But this leaves us thinking, what other names could Android 4.4 have been? Let’s have a look at 9 other alternatives that were tossed around:

9. Android 4.4 – Mary Janes

8. Android 4.4 – Hot Dog

7. Android 4.4 – Nutella

Now obviously most of these don’t start with a K. But we were thinking that Google might deviate from the previous naming scheme of using deserts and going through the alphabet. They started at Android 1.5 – Cupcake, then Android 1.6 – Donut, then Android 2.0/2.1 Eclair, Android 2.2 – Froyo, Android 2.3 – Gingerbread, Android 3.0 – Honeycomb, Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich, and Android 4.1/4.2/4.3 Jelly Bean. So next is a K desert. Which many of us thought would be Key Lime Pie, and even some thought it might be called Krispy Kreme. Which would need licensing as well. But I kinda like the Kit Kat name. It’s something we all know and love. Maybe not a desert, but it’s definitely a chocolaty treat.

So we were wondering, what is Google going to do next for L, and Android 4.5? Maybe Android 4.5 – Licorice? Or could they be going on to a new naming scheme and get another candy bar licensed for their L release? That would be interesting, and it would help them market it a bit more. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I really liked the Kit Kat videos they released today, especially the ones making fun of Apple and Jony Ives. Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
