Getting Started with BBM on Android

Earlier this week, Blackberry Messenger made it’s way to Android finally. Although many of us had to wait in line to get into the app, now that most of us are in and are able to use BBM we thought we’d put together a nice getting started post for everyone.

Setting Up BBM

1. Download BBM from the Play Store (Note: You’ll need to be running Android 4.0 or higher)
2. Open up the BBM app once installed
3. Enter your email address
4. Create your account
5. Your BBID is known as your email address

How to Add Contacts

1. Tap on the overflow/menu button, the 3 dots
2. Next tap on Invite to BBM
3. Then Choose which ever method you’d like to use to invite that contact
4. Enter the information as needed
5. Once that contact accepts the request, they’ll be added to your contact list

Sending Messages

1. Tap on the BBM icon in the right corner, it’ll have a + sign
2. Select a contact or two
3. Enter your message
4. Tap on Send

Settings

1. Tap on the overflow button on the right
2. Then Choose Settings

Inside the Settings part of the app you can customize your notifications and much more. But be careful about disabling the persistent notification.

Broadcast Message

This is a message that is sent to all of your contacts

1. Tap on the overflow button
2. Select Broadcast Message
3. Type in your Message
4. Tap Send

It’s really not too hard to learn how to use the BBM app, since it looks a lot like the BB10 BBM app looks like. Although some of the design choices are ones I don’t like, it’s something that others may like. Although I do wish more of the gestures worked.
