Could Google Drive be Gaining Chromecast Functionality?

Chromecast seems to be the new thing Google is pushing everywhere. And unlike Google TV, I think they did this one correctly. By making it work with both Android and iOS devices. Although there isn’t a whole lot of apps to choose from just yet. There is Netflix and YouTube on the Android side, and on iOS there’s Hulu+ as well. So it’s really hurting for app support.

Now it looks like the next thing to get Chromecast integration is Google Drive. Now a lot of you may think “Google Drive? Why?” Well it’s simple. Imagine you are going to a meeting and you have a presentation to give. Take your Chromecast along plug it in and load up your presentation. Takes just a couple of seconds. Almost seamless. I’d imagine it’d be very useful for those in education. I’d imagine you could also play videos you have saved in drive, show off pictures or just about anything else. The big difference between using this for Google Drive and something like Microsoft’s office is that this is all web-based. So say you’re travelling and will be making a presentation, all you need is a TV with HDMI. Pretty neat right?

This was actually spotted by a German Google Drive user, Daniel Lohse. The functionality is actually located under the “Present” tab inside the presentation document. Then the dropdown menu shows the ability to cast to Chromecast, but just the presentation, not the tab. Lohse didn’t indicate if he was successful in casting a presentation to a TV or other monitor, the functionality seems like it would be really cool.

So far this isn’t showing up in the beta build of Chrome OS. Hopefully this is something that comes to all parts of Google Drive, as it could be a great tool. And help Google sell even more Chromecasts, not that they are having trouble anyways.
