Building on it’s efforts to build a more significant presence closer to giants Google and Apple, Samsung have announced plans to open a new Samsung Research America R&D center in Silicon Valley, which is home to many of the world’s largest technology corporations as well as thousands of small startups. Samsung, of course, aren’t new to the area, having been present in Silicon Valley for more than 30 years. The new campus is part of Samsung’s strategy to tap into the wealth of talent that keeps Silicon Valley at the forefront of technological advances.
In case you haven’t heard of Samsung Research America before, SRA (as it will be referred to from now on), is actively involved in researching emerging technology to create new business, and developing core technology to enhance the competitiveness of Samsung’s vast array of products, which range from mobile phones to televisions, personal computers, printers, cameras, home appliances, LTE systems, medical devices, semiconductor and LED solutions. The primary research areas of SRA include advanced software, interactive services, user experience and emerging technologies in convergence.
Samsung are building the new campus in the belief that it will help sustain the rapid-growth of the organisation, which has seen the electronics giant amass $187.8 billion in sales across 79 countries, as well as employing 270,000 people globally.
“Our new state-of-the-art R&D center will provide an outstanding environment to support our plans for strategic growth and attracting the very best employees,” said Daniel Eum, president of SRA. “This expansion, in addition to Samsung Semiconductor Inc.’s new San Jose campus, builds upon Samsung’s 35-year history in the Bay Area and reinforces our commitment to the valley.”
This will be the second facility that Samsung have broke ground for in the Bay Area this year, with Samsung SemiConductor Inc. having announced the 1.1 million square foot expansion of it’s San Jose operations in July.
The 8.5 acre campus will include 2 six-story class-A office buildings totalling around 385,000 square foot, as well as 2 parking structures which will be 5 and 6 stories respectively. The design of the buildings will be designed according to the LEED green building rating system, and will achieve Gold and LEED Platinum certification standards in the design, construction, operations and maintenance of the Mountain View Campus. As you can see from the rendering, two of the buildings incorporate solar technology in a bid to increase energy efficiency. The state-of-the-art campus is expected to open its doors December 2014.
