After confirming that smartphones with QHD (2K) and UHD (4K) AMOLED Displays are in the pipeline during yesterday’s Semiconductor and Display Technology Roadmap Seminar 2014 ; Samsung are also reported to be ready to mass produce AMOLED displays in the 8 – 10 inch range; developing as many as 3 tablets featuring AMOLED technology, with at least one new model rumoured to be making an appearance at MWC 24 -27 February 2014.
This isn’t Samsung’s first attempt at releasing a tablet with an AMOLED display. You may recall the infamous Galaxy Tab 7.7, which had an appropriately sized 7.7 inch WXGA SUPER AMOLED Plus screen, with 1280 x 800 resolution. It won many plaudits for its premium build quality as well as its (then) eye-popping display. Sadly it was also known for being banned in the European Union because of alleged infringements on Apple’s unitary industrial design patents.
Up until now, AMOLED technology was deemed too difficult and expensive to produce quality mid-sized AMOLED displays in sizeable quantities; but Samsung would appear to have solved those technical difficulties if they are gearing up to begin mass production of the AMOLED displays from February.
It’s unclear just where the AMOLED equipped devices will fit into Samsung’s range of tablets, but with the recent release of the Galaxy Note Pro tablet, which is priced at a premium, we would hope that the AMOLED tablets will be more reasonably priced. A March – April release is touted for the AMOLED equipped tablets.
