Introduction

This comparison has an older face, the LG G2 from the end of September, and a new face, the just released HTC One M8.  I know there will be the naysayers that will say WHY did you pair the new HTC One M8 with this older model – well, I will tell you.  The LG G2 and the HTC One M8 are actually very close in specifications and the G2 has stood the test of time – there are many people who just will not give up their LG G2, and that speaks volumes.  Both devices use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor – true the one in the HTC One is overclocked, but they are not all that much different.  They both have 2GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB of internal storage, although the HTC One M8 does have room for a microSD card for additional storage. Both have non-removable batteries. Take a look at their specifications below and then we’ll talk about the differences between both devices before we pick a winner.

LG G2

The LG G2 was the first flagship from LG that was available on all four major carriers…although the buttons on the Verizon model are slightly thinner.  The LG G2 does have a plastic body, but has a great feel…it has a slightly larger display – 5.2 vs 5-inches with Full HD resolution, and even though it has a slightly larger display, the actual dimensions are smaller and it weighs less.  The LG G2 is unique in that its on/off and volume keys are on the back of the device – neither a plus or a minus.  The cameras are very different, yet quality wise, the photos are very similar – the LG G2 uses a 16MP main camera and a 2.1MP front-facing camera for video chatting and selfies.  The 3000mAh battery is larger over the 2600mAh battery in the HTC One M8 and the LG G2 exhibits terrific battery life.  The software is not really a plus over the M8, although there are a few unique features that are really nice – like the KnockOn for waking up the device.

 

HTC One M8

Okay…let’s get the metal body out of the way from the get-go.  The HTC One M8 has a beautiful aluminum body that even has 20-percent more metal in than last year – this year the metal actually wraps up around the edges all the way to the screen and it eliminates the plastic sides.  The device looks beautiful, but it comes with a double-edged sword…metal can easily scratch, dent, and become very cold and hot, depending on the weather.  The HTC One M8 saved the most upgrade for its picture taking…certainly an upgrade from the HTC One M7, although the main camera is the same 4MP UltraPixel lens used last year.  HTC did upgrade to a dual LED flash, and they added a second camera, called the Duo Camera that was designed more for special effects and to add depth to the photos.  HTC improved the already great dual stereo speakers making them 25-percent louder and with better clarity.  The HTC UI, called Sense, has been improved to version 6.0 and it is a definite plus over the others – users seem to really like.

 

…And the Winner Is…HTC One M8

Summary

This was a much tougher decision than you might think – yes, the HTC One M8 is beautiful looking and it sounds phenomenal, but with the screens so similar, processors and memory so similar and a smaller battery, it was a tough and close call.  The HTC One M8 does have the ability to add 128GB of internal storage, comes with Android 4.4 KitKat, and it is newer…which does help in the decision.  The HTC One M7 was a critical success and there is no reason why this new, improved, and beautiful device should not make a bigger splash.  The LG G2 definitely has great battery life, but it just doesn’t have enough extras to beat out the newer HTC One M8.
