Google has begun this week’s updates a bit early – Update Tuesday? The first app up for an update is Google Maps. It’s hitting the big 8 dot 0 today. In version 8.0.0 it brings all kinds of new goodies for us to use in Google Maps, which is still one of the better mapping solutions out there, although I know that some of you prefer the Nokia HERE maps a bit more. For those interested we have the changelog of what’s new, at least Google actually updated the changelog this time, and it’s down below.

“Turn-by-turn navigation now displays distance, arrival time, and quick access to alternate routes. Save and manage offline maps in a custom list for when you’re traveling or have a slow connection. Transit results now display total walking time of your trip and the next scheduled bus or train. Sign in to see your “Places to review” list from recently saved or searched-for places. If you have the Uber app installed, open it right from Google Maps when comparing route options. Bug fixes”

So lots of goodies here. And the transit walk times are probably the biggest feature along with improved offline maps management. Which is important for those that save plenty of maps to their device. The update is available now, but as expected, it’s a staged rollout. So it may be a few days or weeks before everyone has it. But why wait? We have the APK for you to install, if you’re interested. To install it, be sure you have “Unknown Sources” checked (Settings > Security), and then install the APK just like any other app. It’s quite simple to do actually. If you install it, be sure to let us know in the comments below how you’re liking the new update to version 8.0.0 of Google Maps.
