You’ve probably heard of Snapchat, the messaging app that lets you send images and videos to friends, after the message has been viewed it disappears, never to be seen again! Well, last week Facebook released a competing messaging app called Slingshot that was initially only available for download in the US. If the limited release was a disappointment to you, you’ll be happy to know that Slingshot has given a global release.
One of the main differences between Snapchat and Slingshot is that where you can send as many messages as you like in Snapchat, with the recipient able to view each message as it arrives, Slingshot requires you to send a ‘shot’ back in return, so that you can unlock the last ‘shot’ received. On the one hand, you can see why Slingshot has been designed this way, having to send a message in order to view the message you’ve just received may well extend a participants interaction, but on the other hand, it may also prove to be a great annoyance, resulting in a lot of unwanted pictures or videos just so you can view a feed of shots. Once you have unlocked a ‘shot’ you can send a quick response with your reaction. You don’t need to log in with your facebook details, Slingshot is a stand-alone app that uses your mobile number to create a profile.
At the time of writing this article, downloads of the Slingshot app stood around the 1000 mark, with an average review score of just over three stars, with complaints ranging from the people being unable to log in because they hadn’t received a confirmation SMS, to complaints over not being able to log in with their Facebook details. Slingshot is available to both Android (Jelly Bean and above) and iOS users, so you can ‘sling’ messages to most of your friends, with the notable but not surprising exception of Windows Phone.
