At Google’s I/O Conference, they announced their new Google Fit Platform – a set of APIs designed to manage all of your fitness tracking Apps, sensors and wearable devices – and they said the Nike and Adidas were already onboard. Google claims the official Google Fit SDK will launch in a matter of weeks, but it looks like the Adidas’ new miCoach Fit Smart wristband is already popping up on the internet and may be the first device to take advantage of the Google Fit Program, suggesting it will feed data back into Google’s open health platform. It was seen in several spots, one of which was on the trademark website Trademarkia.
Bases on the photos (see above) it looks like the miCoach Fit Smart will use the LED dot display rather than a full LCD display. The green row of dots off to the left could either indicate the battery life or more likely, to monitor you when you have reached your particular goal when exercising. We can definitely see a heart rate monitor on the bottom of the device that would rest up against your wrist. We also know through an FCC filing that the miCoach will use Bluetooth 4.0 LE to communicate. The Trademarkia description says that the miCoach Fit Smart is a product related to:
“Multifunctional electronic devices for displaying, measuring, and uploading to smart phones and personal computers through the Internet and other computer and electronic communication networks information, namely, heart rates, calories burned, time, duration, stride rate, pace, speed, distance and steps taken, for and receiving text, data and image files relating to fitness and athletic training; portable digital electronic devices for providing coaching through visual and haptic feedback.”
We do not know for sure if this will be Adidas’ first Fit device, but given the timing and the announcement from Google that Adidas was already onboard, make the miCoach Fit Smart a perfect ‘fit.’ With news of Nike scaling back its Fuelband to focus more on fitness software, it seems like the time is right for Adidas to make its move into the wearables market – a market that seems to be growing at an extremely fast rate. Hopefully, Adidas will be making an official announcement very soon.
