If you’re the owner of an LG G2, you could be forgiven for coveting its successor, the appropriately titled G3, especially with all the praise that the G3 has been receiving from the press. Our very own Alexander Maxham has been suitably impressed by  first the G2 and more recently the G3, as you can tell from his review. But if you aren’t able to upgrade to the G3 just yet, there’s no need to become a sad panda because there’s help at hand from the talented developer OptimusRs over at the XDA Forums who has created a custom Rom that includes many of the G3’s latest features.

The custom rom is called ‘OptimusG3’ and is based on the latest LG D802 firmware. The custom rom is rooted, and includes the G3’s ability to take 4K video at 120FPS along with the Magic Focus feature. Knock Code support is available for the D802/5/6 and F32ox models, other variants are waiting for new kernel sources to be released by LG. A new lock screen with 13 different unlock effects is also included, along with new boot and shutdown animations. Bloatware has been removed, which according to the changelog means to “Remove a lot of Korean apps” as well as to “Remove a lot of useless apps and files”. The rom is available for all G2 variants, although some features, such as the Knock Code may not yet be fully functional with specific models as previously mentioned.

As with any new custom rom, there are some teething issues such as the Facebook beta not playing nicely, along with the SwiftKey keyboard app causing Google Apps to Force Close on every reboot. That being said, the OptimusG3 rom has been well received, and appears to be well supported, with the developer active in the thread.

It should be noted that, as with any custom rom, you should follow the installation guide to the letter if you plan on flashing OptimusG3 V1.0. Remember to backup your pictures, messages and everything else that is important to you, and more importantly, remember to backup your current firmware so you have something to restore if the installation goes pear-shaped.
