After Google acquired Nest back in January, there really wasn’t much talk about changes with either company. For all we knew, Nest was just going to be a company within Google. Usually after a company acquires another company, we here about executive changes relatively quickly, maybe a month or so after. This lead us to believe that Google, would just leave Nest as it is. However, it looks like Google has plans atleast for one Nest executive!
Today, reports have surfaced from The Information, stating that Nest’s co-founder Tony Fadell will now be in charge of the consumer Hardware at Google. Now, if you don’t remember, Tony Fadell use to work for a little company called Apple and helped design one of the most iconic devices ever, the iPod! Sundar Pichai, who is the lead of Android and Chrome, apparently dismantled all of the Android teams hardware plans. Making way for Tony Fadell to come in and have more of a freedom to start everything fresh with his own design look. This will be very interesting to see fold out. Fadell did a great job with the original iPod hardware when it first came out. He most likely had a lot of say in the way Nest’s thermostate was designed and that has an amazing look and feel to it. We don’t know if Fadell will be just designing Android device hardware or venturing off in different parts of Google Consumer hardware. I am sure that question depends on how well the hardware that Fadell puts into his first few devices.
We haven’t heard of an official announcment on this yet, but if it’s true we should be hearing something soon from the Google camp. No other Nest executives are rumored to be joining Fadell. There is also no word on whether this will keep Fadell from his everyday Nest activity. Recently we saw Nest acquire security camera company Dropcam for $555 millon, and thought that was the only news we would be hearing from Nest. I wonder what other announcements we will be hearing this week from Nest and Google! Only time will tell.
