This past weekend saw the excitement (and disappointment) levels rise for many of us who were checking our emails hoping to see an invite to finally place an order for a OnePlus One handset. Sadly, most of us are still waiting for that email. And as for the lucky people who did receive an invite? Well, it turns out that they have to wait a bit longer as well because it appears that OnePlus have had to delay shipping any units due to a last minute software problem, as evidenced by the invite email shown in the gallery below.

Remember HeartBleed? The OpenSSL exploit that caused a global internet scare, with many of your favourite sites asking your to change your password? Well, the delay has to do with that, the public release of an OpenSSL Security Advisory on June 5 prompted OnePlus and Cyanogen.Inc to delay any order shipping so that they could fix any vulnerabilities that existed in the factory installed firmware. And as with any firmware update, the software needs to be recertified, as well as undergoing quality assurance checks again. This news was forwarded on by Ciwrl from Cyanogen/CyanogenMod who opened a discussion at Reddit ( source link below) to explain the reasons behind the delay, clarifying any misconceptions that the delay was caused by missed deadlines. It’s unknown at present just when the OnePlus One will begin shipping, one would hope the delay will be a case of days rather than weeks.

While it’s commendable that OnePlus/Cyanogen.Inc have delayed the shipping in order to patch the software, it is unusual in this day and age where most electronic devices seem to require a day-one patch in order to operate correctly in the consumers hands. How would you describe the OnePlus One saga? Are you one of the lucky ones who received an invite? Has this latest decision affected your desire to order the OnePlus One or do you still have faith in the invite ordering system?
