Sony’s affordable M2 handset might have been available in the UK since the middle of May, but as with all Sony handsets, there has been a delay in availability in the States. The delay would appear to be at an end though, as a product page for the M2 has appeared on their US website.
The budget friendly M2 is powered by the Snapdragon 400 Quad-Core processor, clocked at 1.2GHz and has 1GB RAM on multi-tasking duties. A front-facing VGA camera is available for those fond of taking selfies, with an 8MP Exmor RS on the rear as the primary camera, which can also take 1080P video recordings. The standard 8GB of internal storage is built-in, and if this isn’t quite enough, a Micro-SD slot is also included. The battery has a 2300mAh capacity. The 4.8-inch TFT qHD display has a resolution of 960 x 540, in keeping with the rest of the M2’s budget specifications. According to its product page, the M2 will ship with Android Version 4.3 Jelly Bean, so it’s not shipping with an up to date version of Android. Here’s hoping that this is remedied in the near future, there really is no excuse for shipping a new handset on a version of Android that is almost a year old and Sony should know better.
On the connectivity front the M2 supports the energy efficient 4.0 LE standard, as well as NFC. The M2 lacks LTE support though,and is ‘limited’ to HSPA+ for data purposes with theoretical download speeds of up to 21Mbps. Not everyone gets great LTE coverage though, so this may not be such a deal-breaker for some. Luckily, the Sony M2 is priced at $289.99 SIM-free without a service plan, and is available in White, Black and Purple (pictures of which are in the gallery below) from both Sony’s website as well as its brick-and-mortar stores.
