Mobile gaming is fast becoming a viable (and cheaper) alternative to gaming consoles, and while it still has room to improve, the gap between mobile and console gaming shrinking all the time. Modern Combat 5 : Blackout was only released a couple of days ago, but just in case you’re already hankering after something else to play, Warner Bros’ have released their latest installment in the Batman franchise: Arkham Origins.

Batman: Arkham Origins doesn’t offer the same immersive experience as the console or PC versions, instead it’s more a beat-em-up game such as Tekken or Injustice : Gods Among Us, albeit without the complicated controls. Controlling the Caped Crusader merely consists of tapping once for a jab, three times for a combo, with special moves at specific times being activated by sliding the screen. You can attempt to shield Batman from the opponents attack by holding 2 fingers on the screen. I did find that the relatively simple controls helped when casting the screen to the TV via ChromeCast, only really having to look at the mobile when performing special moves, though this was reduced as time went on. Every opponent has their own weaknesses and strengths, so it’s up to you to change your method of attack according to which villain you are fighting against.

As is the trend these days, Arkham Origins is ‘Free’ to play, with bundles of ‘WayneTech’ being available to purchase through the In-App-Purchase menu. The add-ons begin at $1.99 (£1.17) with the WayneTech Bundle 6 and the Wayne Enterprises bundles being the most expensive at $99 (£58.71), a hefty hunk of change. Fair warning: If this is for your kids to play, you might want to ensure that your account needs password approval for every single purchase. Better to be safe than sorry.

As for enjoyment, it’s not my typical game type, but in testing I managed to lose 40 minutes of my life, with no regrets, and I plan on keeping it on the phone to join my other five games :Plants v Zombies 1 & 2, Scrabble, MoviePop and SongPop. It reminded me of playing StreetFighter way-back-when at the gaming arcades that stole so much of my youth, and that’s not a bad thing. Needless to say, if you are looking for a full-on Batman experience with a fully fleshed out story-line, then Batman: Arkham Origins will probably disappoint. There’s more images and a video for you to browse through just below.

You can install Batman: Arkham Origins by clicking the Play Store link below, it also available on iOS if that’s how you roll. Remember that its a download of 1.63GB, so if you don’t have unlimited data on your service plan, wait until you can access WiFi to install the game.
