Last week Justin reported on a couple of unannounced Samsung mobiles that appeared thanks to benchmark results being published, one of which was the Snapdragon 800 powered SM-G8508S, and today an Exynos variant has been spotted on GFXBench with model number SM-G850. It would appear that the same Exynos 5 Octa-Core CPU that is present in the Exynos variant of the Note 3 is also providing the grunt for the SM-G850 with its 4 x Cortex A15 cores and 4 x Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. An unusual amount of RAM is included – 1.8GB with the Hexa-Core Mali T628 GPU providing the graphics.

Other specifications include 32GB of internal storage, and a 4.7-inch display with a 1280 x 720 resolution. Another unusual component is the 11MP rear-facing camera, that is partnered up front with the usual 2MP sensor. Both are capable of 1080p video recording. On the software side of things, the SM-G850 is running Android version 4.4.4 KitKat, and although it isn’t mentioned in the benchmarking result, you can be sure that some version of TouchWiz will be present.

As you can see from the images below, the SM-G850 isn’t far below (and sometimes better than) the S5 in terms of performance, this is definitely helped by only having to power the smaller screen with the lower resolution.

Those are the specs, so just what handset are we looking at here? The thinking is that this is the Neo version of the Galaxy S5, carrying a fairly high level of hardware, with a decent screen, possibly catering to the segment of consumers that want a smaller phone with a good level of performance, i.e. something better than what the S5 Mini offers. You could argue that this is what the S5 Mini should have been all along, instead of making a mockery of the S5 brand by using low-level hardware.

Just when we’ll see the SM-G850 announced remains to be seen, but you would think sooner rather than later, and I’m inclined to believe that it will be revealed before the IFA comes around in September. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or on our Google Plus page.
