Google Docs Gets a Major Update with Android L Support

Just last week, Google announced Android L to us at Google I/O. Android L features a brand new UI and design which is called Material Design. It looks amazing, and we’re waiting for more apps to be updated to support Android L and now Google Docs has been updated to support it. This update is what some people would say is the biggest update Google Docs for Android has ever gotten, and they’d be right on that front. It’s actually a pretty small update in version numbers, going from 1.3.144.18 to 1.3.251.9. So what’s new in this update? Well lots of goodies here.

This update includes Fewer persistent icons in action bar, Floating new document button, Adds dictionary permissions for better spellcheck and corrections (also can add words to dictionary more easily), New account selection drop-down style, Create and edit Word docs, New details page, File list differentiates between Word and Docs files, New editing UI, Open files from device storage, and Send files as PDF or Word.

There’s also a few UI tweaks in this update, which bring it closer to Material design. Although it’s not perfect, it is a major change and one we are happy to see here. It’s not quite full material design, but it’s getting there, and the floating button at the bottom brings it in tow with the Google+ update we saw recently. This update is rolling out now, likely as a staged rollout. But for those that are looking to get the update now, we do have the APK available for download. So if you want to install it, simply download it from the link below, make sure “Unknown Sources” is checked and install away.
