Yesterday, we got word that Sony was looking to put together a Selfie-focused Xperia smartphone, and today they’ve gone ahead and made it official. Dubbed the Xperia C3, Sony isn’t going the whole hog and is just introducing this into their already crowded Xperia line of Android smartphones. While there’s nothing outwardly obvious from their branding that the Xperia C3 is the phone for #selfies, their marketing tells a different story. So too, does the hardware and the software enhancements onboard.
First thing’s first, the front-facing camera on the C3 is a wide-angled affair (to catch all those celeb friends of your when on vacation, naturally) and has a 5-megapixel sensor along with a front-facing flash (to help illuminate those late night selfies you just have to take). All joking aside, the rest of the Xperia C3 is a farily solid mid-range device and features a 5.5-inch 720p display and under the hood, we’re looking at a 1.2 Ghz quad-core CPU (which is most likely a Snapdragon 400) backed up with 1GB of RAM. With expandable storage as well as an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, the Xperia C3 is a fairly middling proposition that will most likely be aimed toward Asia at first. Running Android 4.4.2 on a 2,500 mAh battery the Xperia C3 also supports 4G LTE and there will also be a Dual-SIM variant available.

Where Sony feel like the Xperia C3 will stand out however, is in the software, with lots of camera features baked in. Using the front-facing “selfie-cam”, users can use the device’s Augmented Reality effects to get some pretty amusing selfies, even if you’re just at home on the couch. Elsewhere, there’s the now-obligatory portrait retouching software and you can choose from a whole bunch of different frames for your latest selfie. Unsurprisingly, the Xperia C3 is presumably pretty good for video calls thanks to it’s 5-megapixel wide-angle lens. The Xperia C3 is to go on sale in China next month in August, with other markets to follow.
