Asus have become famous for pushing the envelope of Android device designs. From the very first keyboard-toting Transformer tablet, the Slider and central to this article, the PadFone. The PadFone is a design that Asus have continued to update, the latest of which is the PadFone X Mini that has been spotted making its rounds at the FCC. The PadFone is an Android device that combines the mobile and tablet into one, with the tablet providing extra battery power, larger touch-screen and speaker, and the phone slotting into the rear panel to provide the brains and connectivity.
It’s thought that the PadFone X Mini will be launched on AT&T, due to its compatibility with the 850/1900MHz GSM frequencies, and support for LTE bands 2, 4, 5, and 17. This theory also makes sense when you consider that the devices larger sibling, the PadFone X was launched on AT&T earlier this year. Details on the hardware specifications are scarce, but what we do know is that the mobile phone’s battery has a capacity of 2,050mAh, this doesn’t sound a lot, but remember there is extra power available from the tablet dock. According to the FCC label(gallery below), the PadFone Mini X is model T00S, and unsurprisingly its made in China.
The previous PadFone Mini combined a 4.3-inch phone with a tablet dock that had a 7-inch screen, with a Snapdragon Quad-Core processor providing the muscle, although there was also a variant that was powered by a Dual-Core Intel Atom CPU. So it’s anyone’s guess really as to which CPU Asus will choose to use in the PadFone Mini X.
Like many of its competitors, Asus will be holding a press conference at the IFA on September 3, and this is probably where the PadFone Mini will be unveiled. There’s only a couple of weeks to go before the opening day of the IFA EXPO that is held in Berlin, and that means that there’s going to be a ton of leaks, with manufacturers fighting for media attention like sharks chasing chump in the water. It also means that we will be working away like beavers to bring you all the news as it happens.
