There are many products out there that allow you to use Android apps on your television. Still, the market has plenty of room for growth and new ideas. That in mind, a new contender is about ready to launch their device that does the very same and it’s called Freakbox. Freakbox is a small set top box that plugs right into your television. This is nothing new, but one of the biggest sales points for this device is that the software for Freakbox has been developed by the top developers from the FreakTab community. This means that the device is already able to work with FreakTab custom ROMs.

Freakbox was announced by the developers at FreakTab towards the end of last month, and carried a price tag of $149. However, now that the product is available for pre order, the price has dropped by $46, making the end price $103. While that price seems a bit steep for the market there are a few things to keep in mind.

FreakTab is a community of developers who are well known for developing custom ROMs that run on rooted Android devices. This means the team doesn’t have their own manufacturing plants around the world. The limitation on production makes this device a limited edition device, which can explain for the higher pricing. Though it should be no issue for them to keep up with software updates for their Freakbox, since software is their specialty.

The Freakbox will be running a custom version of Android 4.4 KitKat right out of the box. Inside the device is a Rockchip RK 3188 ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM, Mali-400 graphics, and 8GB of storage. There’s also a version of the device that comes with 32GB of storage and a MicroSD card slot of that will allow for an expandable 32GB of storage. The other features of this device include HDMI, S/PDIF, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a headphone jack and 3 USB ports.

While the device may not be competitively priced for the space, there will surely be customers who are looking for some alternatives to the usual Roku. What do you think, are you interested in a device that runs custom ROMs, or will you be sticking with the usual? Let us know down below or on our G+ page.
