It’s been a busy few days, what with the IFA trade show in Berlin and the Motorola event in Chicago, and we aren’t finished just yet. Neither is Motorola, Tom wrote earlier about how Moto Maker is coming to the UK (finally!), and we can expand on that news a little.
What is Moto Maker? It’s a service that Motorola provides the Moto X owner to customise the rear panel of their handset. You can choose from a variety of materials that range from plastic, wood, denim or leather and in a multitude of colours. You can even change the highlights of the handset. It means that there’s no excuse for walking round with a dull black handset in your hand any more. You can read more about the new Moto X here.
Last year when the original Moto X was unveiled, many Motorola fans in the UK and elsewhere were left green with envy at the news that Moto Maker would not be available in their countries. This time round, Motorola have expanded the availability of their service, along with the addition of new options materials-wise to help make your custom rear panel stand out. We were previously in awe at the Bamboo wood option, this year Motorola have added a premium leather alternative. The leather is sourced from the Horween Leather Company that is based in Chicago, Illinois, and founded in 1905. Horween prides itself on producing all its leathers by hand. The leather backs will be available in a variety of colours ranging from Natural (Brown), Cognac (Red), Black and Navy blue. Coincidentally, Horween also supplies the leather wristbands for the Moto 360 smart watch.
If the leather backs don’t do it for you, you can also choose from the same range of wood backs that include Bamboo, Ebony, Teak and Walnut with the comfortable in the knowledge that all the wood is now sourced in an “environmentally-friendly and socially responsible manner”. The wood backs are all certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
Along with the new design choices comes the news that Moto maker will be available in a couple of new countries for the first time. Orange and Telcel will offer Moto Maker in France, with Phones 4U the chosen supplier in the UK. Phone House is Germany’s chosen stockist, and in the States you can access Moto Maker via AT&T and Verizon. There’s no love for Sprint or T-Mobile customers, although an Unlocked version of the Moto X is expected to appear at some point, which soothe T-Mobile users with feelings of neglect.
