Samsung has been pretty active at this year’s IFA, they showcased their long-awaited Galaxy Note 4 phablet, Gear S smartwatch, GearVR headset and last but not least Galaxy Note Edge phablet. The Galaxy Note Edge is basically a bit smaller and wider of a Galaxy Note 4 with an additional side edge screen which has its own set of functions. The Note Edge packs a serious set of specs on the inside, it features a 5.6-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) Super AMOLED display along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of internal storage (expandable via MicroSD card up to 64GB). The device is powered by a Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor clocked at 2.7GHz. 16-megapixel OIS camera can be found on the back while there’s a 3.7-megapixel shooter located on the front of the device. 3000mAh battery is included as is Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung’s “Revolving UX” UI on top of it. The Galaxy Note Edge packs all of the Galaxy Note 4 functions including the S Pen stylus.
Aside from all those capabilities that it brings from Note 4, this device has its own set of special features thanks to that edge screen. Samsung Tomorrow posted a video on YouTube in which they explain some Galaxy Note Edge features (video is down below if you want to check it out). There are 3 panels available on that edge screen, “Notifications, “Quick Panel” and “Express Me”. That edge does pack a lot of functionality inside, it can bring you notifications while you’re doing something else on your phone, watching a clip or a movie. You can see incoming notifications without any additional actions and without interruptions on the main screen itself. Also, when you use Samsung’s applications, this edge screen also has some functionality inside. For example, when using the camera, your shutter key along with other options are located on that small screen and the main screen is completely dedicated to the image itself.
If you swipe from top to bottom on the edge screen you’ll get “Quick Tools”, which consists of a “Ruler”, “Stopwatch”, “Timer”, “Flashlight” and a “Voice Recorder”. You can access the setting of the edge screen by simply swiping up the bottom of that small screen. You can manage your panels from there, other than the 3 default panels I’ve mentioned you can add 4 more, so that’s 7 overall. This screen has yet another functionality which is rather cool, the feature is called “Night Clock”. It’s exactly what it says it is, a dimly lit night clock which you can see in the dark when you wake up and want to see the time by looking at your night stand or something to that effect. Developers could make this edge screen even more useful, Samsung has already released Galaxy Note Edge’s SDK. This is something new and it looks cool at the very least. I’m worried about accidental presses on that edge screen though, considering the way it is placed. I’m sure that some people will find this device interesting and will prefer it over the Note 4, though it won’t sell better than Samsung’s well-known phablet, that’s for sure.
