Fans of the Galaxy Note series of phones might be waiting patiently for the official announcement of the latest iteration later today at the IFA, but that isn’t Samsung’s only mention today. Here we have the SM-G5309W that has just passed through China’s Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center (China’s version of the FCC), and is purportedly their first smart phone to be powered by the Snapdragon 410 processor.
Looks-wise, the SM-G5309W is nothing much to look at. As you can see from the gallery below, it’s pretty much the standard Samsung design that has been around since the beginning of the Galaxy Series of phones, albeit with tweaks and variations. It’s not going to win any design awards, but then it’s not meant to compete with premium handsets, as you will see by the majority of the specifications below.
On to the hardware, and as mentioned in the title, the SM-G5309W is powered by the Quad-Core Snapdragon 410 clocked at 1.2GHz, and is 64 bit capabilities. Graphics are provided by the Adreno 306 GPU. 1GB of RAM is present on multitasking duty, and there’s 8GB of internal storage, with the option to augment this by up to 64GB via the included Micro-SD slot.
The SM-G5309W has a 5-inch TFT display, with a resolution of 540 x 960. As is becoming common with budget phones now, an 8MP rear-facing camera is included, although surprisingly, a 5MP front-facing camera is available for taking selfies. The SM-G5309W is running Android version 4.4 KitKat out of the box, although with the 64-bit capable Snapdragon 410, you would expect it to receive the Android L update at some point in its life.
So, the SM-G5309W isn’t a premium handset by any means, it’s main features are the 64-bit capable Snapdragon CPU and the 5MP selfie camera. The rest of the specs are distinctly average and standard for this level of phone. There are no details as yet regarding pricing, but you would expect the SM-G5309W to be priced very aggressively if it is to compete with China’s home-produced handsets from companies such as Xiaomi and Meizu.
