Xiaomi has been in the headlines a fair amount recently, with their strategy of selling smart phones one batch at a time. It seems that no matter how big the batch is, it’s sold in double-quick time. It’s a cautious approach which mirrors the Chinese Handset manufacturers view to expanding into new territories. One of their latest new markets, India, has welcomed their value-for-money handsets with open arms. Indeed, the only real criticism received is that Xiaomi can’t actually make enough of their products to satisfy demand. The demand for the Redmi 1S is more than understandable when you consider the high level of specifications it offers for the amazing price of just Rs.5,999.
Take their Redmi 1S smart phone for example, a batch of 40,000 handsets sold out in just 4.2 seconds by FlipKart on September 2. Can you imagine the amount of page refreshing that was going on? You might think that the after the initial rush, demand might slow down and it would become easier to purchase the Redmi 1S. And it has, to a tiny extent. Xiaomi announced via their Twitter and Facebook accounts that today’s batch of 40,000 took a slightly longer 4.5 seconds to sell out. Besides showing appreciation, Xiaomi also informed buyers that the complimentary Micro-SIM card sleeve and Screen Protector would be shipping free-of-charge in 2-4 business days.
It’s no easy thing to purchase a Xiaomi phone. You don’t just navigate to the product page, add the Redmi 1S to the basket and proceed to check-out. You have to register to gain access to the sale, which is announced for a specific time on a specific day. If you forget or get waylaid and miss the sale, its gone and your have to wait for the next sale to be held.
40,000 sounds like a fair amount of units, doesn’t it? But when you think of India’s population, its barely a drop in the ocean.
