With most smart phone manufacturers generally following the same strategy of bigger screens, more processor cores and yet more software features, sometimes its a breath of fresh to see a handset maker trying something different. And that’s definitely one word that could describe the dual-screen YotaPhone, because it sure is different. And its launching on FlipKart in India today.
Let’s take a closer look at just what the YotaPhone has to offer, tackling the elephant in the room head-on. The YotaPhone has two displays, with the main one being a 4.3-inch IPS LCD affair with a resolution of 1280 x 720 with 342ppi (pixels-per-inch). By todays standards it can certainly be classed as ‘mini’. Now on to the other screen that uses e-ink technology, and has a 640 x 360 resolution with 170ppi. And it’s always-on. That’s right, it stays on permanently, even if the devices battery is flat thanks to the e-ink display only using power when it changes states. The display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass technology. The battery has an 1800mAh capacity, which should last the day thanks to the e-ink screen’s frugality. The YotaPhone weighs in at 146 grams, that’s not terribly light for a 4.3-inch phone but you do have take the dual-screens in to account. To put it into perspective, the YotaPhone weighs 1 gram more than the Galaxy S5. Those dual-screen also impact on the phone’s dimensions which are 67 x 133 x 9.99mm.
On to the rest of the specifications and here we see that the YotaPhone is powered by the Dual-Core Snapdragon 400 ( that is clocked at 1.7GHz with an Adreno 320 GPU pushing the graphics. There is 2GB of RAM on tap for Multi-tasking along with a more than handy 32GB of internal storage, although there is no Micro-SD card support. There’s 1MP front-facing camera for video chat and selfies if you must do so, with a 13MP camera on the ‘rear’ along with LED flash and Auto-Focus. On the software side of things and this is where the YotaPhone is let down, running an outdated version of Android, version 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
So the YotaPhone is a different phone, with an interesting mix of hardware components. You can find it for sale in India exclusively from FlipKart for the price of Rs. 23,499 ($381).
