If you thought that phones were about as thin as they could possibly get, think again because a company called Kazam has just laid claim to having the world’s thinnest smart phone. Apparently the handset is just 5.15mm thin and is called the Tornado 348. I’m pretty sure that you probably hadn’t heard of Kazam before today, and that’s with good reason. Kazam is a relatively new company, and is made up of ex-HTC staff. It appears that the Kazam Tornado 348 is a rebadged Elife S5.1, produced by Gionee. Gionee appear content to focus their efforts at selling the Elife S5.1 in China later this year, allowing other companies to sell their handsets elsewhere around the globe under different brand names.
Aside from being wafer-thin, the Kazam Tornado 348 has a uni-body chassis made out of a aluminium-magnesium alloy. This allows the Tornado to weigh in at just 95.5 grams with dimensions of 139.8 x 67.5 x 5.15mm. It’s hardly going to strain the seams of your front pocket. It’s powered by a MediaTek Octa-Core processor (MT6592) and has 1GB of RAM for multi-tasking duty. There’s 16GB of internal storage and that’s pretty much it as the handset doesn’t have a Micro-SD card slot. Fans of selfies will be happy to find out that the Tornado 348 has a 5MP front-facing camera, while there is an 8MP camera and flash on the rear that can record 1080p video. You can view the images on the 4.8-inch AMOLED display that has a 1280 x 720 resolution, with protection from knocks and bumps courtesy of Corning’s Gorilla Glass. Finally, a 2050mAh battery is present. The Tornado 348 arrives with Android version 4.4.2 KitkAt out of the box.
Besides there being no Micro-SD card slot, the Tornado 348 doesn’t support 4G either. On the brighter side of things, Kazam are offering one year’s screen protection for free, with customers eligible to claim for one free screen replacement.
If this is your cup of tea, the Kazam Tornado 348 will be launched in the UK from around the middle of November for £249 ($396). As yet it’s unclear how Kazam will be distributing the device.
