One of the perks of being a T-Mobile customer is the ability to make calls as well as send text messages over WiFi. Almost all of the newer smartphones on T-Mobile’s network support this feature but it looks like Google’s latest smartphone, unfortunately, will not. At least not at first.
Due to the Nexus 6’s lack of carrier modifications, it will not support WiFi calling upon its initial release on November 12th, but it will gain it later on. T-Mobile has said that the handset will be gaining WiFi calling support in “early 2015”, hopefully this means sometime in January of February of 2015. The Nexus 6 will gain the feature via an over-the-air update that T-Mobile says is made possible by enhancements in Android 5.0 Lollipop. This is interesting and leaves us with a few questions, for instance, does this mean that phones like the Nexus 5 which will surely receive Android 5.0 will also be capable of receiving an over-the-air update to add WiFi calling? Or any phone that receives Android 5.0 for that matter. But since the press release by T-Mobile pertaining to this makes no mention of such things, all we can do for now is play the waiting game and see what happens.
The Nexus 6 will be available from T-Mobile starting on November 12th and will be $0 down for $27.08 a month for two years, this will end up costing you a total of 649.92. The Nexus 6 will include a “beautiful Quad HD display” and a 3220mAh battery that supports Motorola’s Turbo Charging which allows the phone to get up to 6 hours of battery life with only 15 minutes of charge time. And of course this will be the first device on the market running Android 5.0 Lollipop, a pretty big factor in our opinion.
Below is the official press release from T-Mobile.
“T-Mobile to Bring Nexus 6 to its Data Strong Network this November
Fall is a wonderful time of year; the leaves begin to change colors, families come together, and most importantly, there’s yet another awesome new smartphone coming to T-Mobile. The Nexus 6 by Motorola will join T-Mobile’s stellar device lineup on November 12 for $0 down (and $27.08 a month for 24 months on our Equipment Installment Plan).
The Nexus 6 sports a beautiful 6-inch Quad HD display that was made for streaming music, movies and more on T-Mobile’s Data Strongâ„¢ Network. And with a 3220mAh battery and Turbo Charging, customers can get up to 6 hours of battery life with only 15 minutes of charging – so instead of spending time tethered to a wall, you can enjoy the freedom of being on-the-go.
Shipping with Android 5.0, the new Nexus 6 gives customers the latest and greatest Google mobile experience, and seamless integration with the apps they love. Plus, this hot new smartphone is expected to support Wi-Fi Un-leashed beginning in early 2015 with an over-the-air update- making it the first-ever Nexus device that will support Wi-Fi Calling thanks to enhancements in Android 5.0.
And only with the Un-carrierâ„¢ can customers use the latest, super-sized devices the way they were meant to be used – with no annual service contract, no domestic overages and unlimited music streaming all on the nation’s fastest LTE network, plus unlimited data and texting in 120+ countries and destinations − and now, Wi-Fi Un-leashed.
