There are a lot of different standards out there when it comes to wireless communications, like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which all make it nice and easy to have all sorts of different devices all over the world work with different pieces of hardware. The Wi-Fi Alliance is the consortium that’s responsible for making sure hardware like smartphones, laptops and all the little communication chips in our beloved electronics are playing by the rules. An extension of that is of course software, which has a lot to do with whether or not a device is really playing by the rules. As such, software updates now have to be certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance just like different pieces of hardware.

This time around, an update for the Sony Xperia Z3 has been certified by the Alliance as being ready-to-go and it could well be the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. There’s no information from the Alliance that says as much, but considering the certification date is February 16th, we can’t imagine it being anything but the big update to Lollipop. Considering we’re now getting dangerously close to Sony’s self-set deadline of “the beginning of 2015” which in business terms is basically the first three months of any year, it’s more than likely this is Android 5.0.

We’re hopeful that this is in fact the update to Android 5.0, because after all Sony are lagging behind the likes of Samsung and HTC, both of whom have already updated their flagships from last year to Lollipop in a number of markets. The Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 3 and even the Galaxy S4 have started to see the update in many places all over the globe and the HTC One (M8) has been updated in many markets as well. Sony often take their time when it comes to updates, but as a Sony owner myself I can say that I’ve never had any major problems with these updates. Not everyone is going to like the waiting though, so hopefully Sony is about ready to let the sweet treat that is Lollipop loose very soon.
