Back at Mobile World Congress just two weeks ago we saw a flurry of virtual reality headsets get announced.  Samsung has been in the VR game since the launch of the Gear VR, powered by the Galaxy Note 4 back in Fall 2014.  They also announced a new unit powered by the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, but Samsung wasn’t the biggest name in town this time around.  HTC dropped quite a little bomb on us when they announced a brand new partnership with famed game developer Valve, famous for the Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress and Portal franchises just to name a few.  This incredibly epic partnership is something that no one apparently saw coming, and it’s a partnership that’s likely to make HTC’s Vive VR headset the one to own when it makes its commercial debut later this year.

HTC’s Vive isn’t just another VR headset in the sea of headsets being released this year, it’s quite possibly the best out there when you consider the package as a whole.  Utilizing two individual 1200 x 1080 pixel screens, one for each eye, both running at 90Hz to keep motion sickness to a minimum and immersion to maximum.  The headset itself is engineered to be not only comfortable but to keep you locked into the VR experience by giving your head a bit of breathing thanks to the built-in ventilation, ensuring you don’t feel trapped.  The magic of interaction is taken to all new heights with the HTC Vive though, and this is truly what makes the Vive different from other VR technology.

There are over 70 sensors packed into the Vive making up a system code named Lighthouse which sees the actual room you are in and is able to track things to 1/10th of a degree accuracy.  This means that whole you’ll be utilizing the Steam controller or one of your choosing for traditional input with games, you can also reach out and grab things in the VR world, all without having to have extra accessories.  You’ll see this type of interaction in the first game developed by Valve specifically for SteamVR and the HTC Vive below, called The Gallery: Six Elements.  The Gallery takes place in what looks like a mystical but realistic setting, while the gameplay appears to be very heavily puzzle and story driven much like the Portal series.  Check out the gameplay trailer below of a beginning segment of the game and let us know what you think of the future of gameplay in a VR headset!
