Throughout the latter part of last year, a lot of the AT&T news revolved around the possible purchase of Mexican wireless provider, Iusacell. As is the case with this sort of thing, the back and forth went on throughout the end of the year, with AT&T announcing their intention to buy, the progress of the deal and so on. In fact, it was not until mid-way through January, when AT&T formally announced that they have completed the purchase. As such, it would have then been expected that the AT&T and Mexican purchasing news would have slowed down.

However, literally within days (10 days), AT&T had already announced their intention to buy another Mexican wireless provider, Nextel Mexico. As part of that announcement, AT&T detailed that they expect the deal to be a forgone conclusion and a done deal by mid-2015. Well, depending on whether you consider it to be mid or still in the earlier part of the year, it now looks likes the deal has been realized and the matter closed. AT&T have today announced that they have completed the deal to purchase Nextel Mexico.

According to the AT&T announcement (source link below), the final price of the sale was in line with what had been previously reported as $1.875 billion. Less close to $430 million for various debts and adjustments. This is somewhat less than what the U.S. carrier paid for Iusacell, with that sale coming in closer to the $2.5 billion marker. Regardless, the confirmation of this second acquisition of a Mexican wireless provider, significantly highlights AT&T’s intention to secure some of the growth noted in Mexico and also to offer a much more cohesive and structured approach to their business in the Unites States and Mexico, jointly. According to the announcement, AT&T has clearly stated that they plan to integrate the two Mexican companies into one company, which will be “focused on bringing more choices, better service and faster mobile Internet speeds to more locations throughout Mexico“. Not to mention, continue on their plan to create the first ever ‘North American Mobile Service Area’. You can read the full AT&T press release for more information by clicking the source link below.
