Prior to the start of today’s Google I/O event, there had been a number of rumored features and services expected to come from Google. While the big ones likes Android M will obviously steal most of the limelight. one particular rumor has been gaining significant momentum. This is, of course, Google’s new photo service. For those that missed the early announcements, Google have been very highly rumored to be due to be announcing a new photo service which has been said to bring photos away from Google+. Well, like most of the other announcements that have come through so far, Google have now confirmed that ‘Google Photos’ (as it is now known) is here.
A lot of the main features of the new service has been previously leaked in reports, however, the premise of Google Photos is to bring together a common place for all your images and videos. As such, the announcement detailed that android users will be able to bring together their images from all of their devices directly to Google Photos. Not to mention, it will also automatically sync with your Google Drive. Again, as already rumored, Google Photos will also offer a much-improved ability to find your images once they are archived. This is through Google Photo’s ability to group and display images based on fundamental commonalities. Think ‘people’, ‘places’, ‘objects’ and so on. In short, users will be able to search and view their images based on common criteria. Not to mention, Google Photos will also offer a much greater ability to edit your images in a much simpler manner. In fact, with just a tap of the button, images will be able to be enhanced or collated.
Of course, social media is everything when it comes to images and Google have not ignored this market either by confirming that Photos will be able to share images with multiple social media outlets including Twitter, Hangouts and WhatsApp. Lastly, and probably most interestingly, Google also announced that users will be able to upload an unlimited number of photos (up to 16-megapixels) and videos (1080p) to Google Photos and store them so they are available anywhere and on any device, for free. In terms of when the service will roll out, well, that is probably the best news as Google announced Google Photos will be available to download and use starting later today
