Google’s I/O event is well underway and now, so is the keynote speech. There has already been a number of confirmations coming in, including that of Android M, along with the ability to better control app permissions. Not to mention, Google has also finally unveiled the highly rumored Android Pay. Well, another highly rumored new Android addition which has been circulating, is that of ‘Brillo’. Although, the name might be more familiar with the kitchen, Brillo has been touted as a new android feature which is due to land. For those that missed the earlier announcements, Brillo is Google’s take on the internet of things (IoT). As with everything today, the details of Brillo is still currently coming through and as such, more details will become known as the day goes on. However, so far Sundar Pichai has introduced Brillo and confirmed that it will be the way Google hopes android will bring together all of your connected smaller devices. In fact, Google has also stated that Brillo will involve the combining of Nest, Android and Chrome. These android platforms and devices will work together to bring a more unified experience to your home and connected devices.
According to the details, Brillo is based upon android and is designed to work with smaller connected devices. This is utilized using Bluetooth as well as WiFi. During the announcement, Pichai also announced Weave, will be the language used by all of these devices to effectively communicate with each other. Weave will essentially allow devices and products to connect to each other and will be open source, for third party developers to add to the use of Brillo. Not to mention that Android devices will be able to automatically detect connected Brillo devices. In terms of when you can expect Brillo and Weave to arrive, Brillo will be available in Q3 of this year while Weave will follow in Q4. Unfortunately, the announcement did not come with any explanation of why the name Brillo.
