As excited as we get when a new Android OS is released, unless you own a Nexus device, we are often left wondering when or if we will ever get an update.  We are at the hands of the manufacturers to update the new operating system with their UIs (User Interface) on top before they can release them to us as an OTA (Over-the-Air).  Many users get a new device every 2 years and are not as affected by the updating of older devices, but if you need to hang on to your device, Sony may be the best shot at getting the latest update to those older devices.

Our source spoke with Sony to find out exactly what updates will find their way to Canada.  They said that most of the older Xperia Z Ultras and Xperia Tablet Zs have already received their OTA to Lollipop – once only given to their flagship models, the Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3 smartphones.  Sony also told them the even the remaining Z series devices, which include the Z1 and ZL, will receive their Lollipop update in the coming weeks.  The update is number 10.6.A.0.454 and should be approximately 700 Megabytes.  Sony apparently is not stopping anytime soon – there is word out that several Xperia Z3 smartphones have already been spotted running Android 5.1.1.

The Sony Xperia Z and ZL have been in Canada for over two years.  The Xperia’s ‘little brother,’ the Xperia ZL had some pretty decent specs for the time and came sporting a 5-inch FHD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and 441 pixels-per-inch (PPI).  It uses a Qualcomm quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, although there is a microSD card for expansion up to an additional 64GB of memory.  The Xperia XL has a 13MP main camera with autofocus and an LED flash.  There is also a 2MP front-facing camera (FFC) for social media selfies or video chatting.  It is powered by a non-removable 2370mAh battery and was originally running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

Since Sony has released the information about the upgrades, you should start seeing them very shortly.  What you will have is a solid Sony Xperia device with the latest Lollipop.  Who knows, you may be wanting to keep that device a little while longer.
