When you’re in the market for a new smartphone, there’s a ton of stuff to weight out. From what components are in the device, manufacturer, operating system, future support, overall design and aesthetics, but on top of all that comes one particular important subject. How will the device handle with everyday drops, scrapes among various other accidents? The HTC One M9 has a nice metal body which would mean that this particular handset will be able to sustain some damage a bit more than some of the other higher budget smartphones on the market. With that said just how much can the HTC One M9 take before it hits the breaking point? A new video uploaded online takes the HTC One M9 and puts it through the ringer with drop tests and even a welding torch.

The tests started out rather normal. Several drops were made from chest height and with it, we’ve seen the HTC One M9 hold up rather well. From landing on the back and sides, we could see some slight scrapes though nothing significantly damaged to which the smartphone would no longer be deemed usable. However, when the handset was dropped with the display facing the ground it did shatter parts of the screen but even with a shattered screen, the smartphone worked normally.

After these basic drop tests, the video took an unexpected turn. Consumers can now witness how long an HTC One M9 can withstand an actual welding torch. The torch itself exposed the HTC One M9 to 700 centigrade fire and for 15 seconds the device kept its cool. Unfortunately, within a minute the device shutdown and slowly the backing and internals were scorched to the point of no return. Lucky for you, the chances of having to endure that type of heat is slim to none. Even still, it’s pretty remarkable that the handset could last a full 15 seconds against a welding torch.

HTC’s One M9 features a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. With 32GB of internal storage and 3GB of RAM, consumers will have the ability to bump up their storage to 128GB thanks to the microSD card slot. Powering the device is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with an Adreno 430 GPU. Currently out of the box the HTC One M9 will be running Android’s latest 5.0 Lollipop operating system with a Sense 7 user interface. Interested in learning more about the handset?
