India’s largest smartphone manufacturer Micromax had launched a new subsidiary, YU, some time back to take on growing competition from the influx of Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi and Meizu. The company markets Android smartphones under the YU brand, mostly targeted at the urban youth. The first ever smartphone released under the brand was the YU Yureka, a mid-range handset said to be a rebranded Coolpad F2 4G for the most part. But the brand’s biggest USP is that its phones run on CynogenOS. The phone was originally released with CynogenOS 11, which is based on Android 4.4 KitKat. The phone already received the Android 5.0 Lollipop based CynogenOS 12S update last month, but as per latest reports in the Indian media, YU seems to have started rolling out yet another update for the said device. The update that has started rolling out as of Friday, is an incremental one, mostly relating to bug-fixes and minor tweaks rather than any major feature enhancement. The latest firmware is based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop rather than Android 5.1, but the build number has jumped from YNG1TAS0W0 to YNG1TAS1K0, which is dated May 1st, 2015.

The update will roll out in phases over the next few days, so it may take some time before every single Yureka handset receives the current firmware update, which is available Over-The-Air (OTA) and is around 130 MB in size. The full firmware ZIP file can also be downloaded directly from Cyanogen’s site and flashed onto the phone. The file however is a lot larger and comes in at 644 MB in size. YU claims that this update is a result of all the feedback it has gathered from its beta testers from around the country, and will result in improved performance, security and battery life, according to YU. The official changelog simply says: “This update provides power improvements and security enhancements for your device.”

It was just a few days ago that the Micromax-owned company had announced the launch of their latest handset – the entry-level YU Yuphoria, which is available for around $110 from Amazon India via flash sales. That particular device comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop based CynogenOS 12 pre-loaded and will see its first flash sale happen on May 28th.
