When Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy S6 and dual-curved Galaxy S6 Edge at Mobile World Conference this past March, it was meet with praise and near-universal acclaim. Critics hailed the glass and metal design, revamped camera and an almost bare bones TouchWiz. After the poor reception of the Galaxy S5, Samsung was hoping and expecting big global profits from these new phones, but now just a few months later that does not seem to be the case, at least not globally, anyway.
Industry sources are now saying that even though Samsung is expected to post a 3.1 Trillion Won ($2.76 Billion) to 3.4 Trillion Won ($3.03 Billion) profit in the second quarter which is up from Samsung’s first quarter, those figures are down 24 percent from the second quarter of last year. The reason for the 24 percent drop in revenue insiders say is because of slower than expected sales of the Galaxy S6 line. Making matters worse is the imminent threat of Apple and a brand new iPhone that is sure to launch this fall. Because of these new projections the global market has lowered its expectations for future sales of the Galaxy S6 line, and Samsung has now put its hope for the next quarter on the upcoming Galaxy Note 5.
The new Galaxy Note 5 is looking like it will launch this September in Berlin at IFA 2015. Codenamed Project Noble the new Galaxy Note 5 is rumored to mimic the Galaxy S6 line in many ways. It is said to have an all metal and glass design with the same speaker placement and continuing the Galaxy S6 trend of a non-removable battery and no microSD support. One main difference in the Galaxy Note 5 is that it’s thought to have a 5.89-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) display. It’s also said to have a USB type-c connector, which would be a first on a Samsung phone.
For most phone companies, an upcoming phone of that magnitude might be enough, but after all this is Samsung. Sources are also saying they plan to release a third edition of the Galaxy S6 line one insiders are calling the Galaxy S6 Plus. The Galaxy S6 Plus is thought to be a larger version of the Galaxy S6 Edge with a dual-curved display and a stronger battery to go along with a new Snapdragon 808 processor. Both of these phones are rumored to be unveiled at IFA 2015 but as with all rumors we will have had to wait and see if these specs and times are correct.
